Case Study - Problem solving at a local manufacturer
The workforce at a local factory were having difficulties with their current vending machines. They had three machines - one can machine, one hot beverage machine and one snack vendor which were located in the canteen area.
The problems
- The vending machines were regularly running out of products
- The snack machine kept jamming which resulted in staff rocking the machine to release the jam. This had led to the machine being damaged.
- The machines were located next to the main walkway from the offices to the factory floor. During break times it was difficult to get past the people standing to use the machines.
- Employees had requested a microwave to heat cold food. A suitable microwave and stand were required.
- The manual in-cup hot beverage machine was slow to use creating a long queue.

The solution
To solve the problem of staff blocking the walkway it was decided to move the vending machines to the other side of the canteen. We supplied new furniture including installation of a breakfast bar with stools giving extra room with two extra seats overall.
We identified that the site only required a visit to restock once a week however some of the snacks were likely to run out. The solution was to supply an extra snack machine.
Both snack machines were fitted with a product sensor which ensured the product was delivered or a refund given automatically.
A machine housing was designed and built around the five machines. This secured the machines in place and prevented staff from tilting the snack machines.
A purpose built microwave stand was included with integral bin and condiment holders.
To prevent long queues at the hot beverage machine we supplied a fully automatic instant model which served drinks quickly and without the need to add sugar or stir.
